Communication Gear
While trekking unpredictable terrain, you must have a way to communicate with your fellow adventurers as well as those at home. Purchase a GMRS radio or another type of handheld radio to stay in contact with those that can help you if your find yourself lost or in danger. Cellphones may be useful, however, you may lose service depending on where you journey. Don’t take any chances with your safety–pack some type of handheld radio so that you can get out of any situation.
Navigation Gear
Although radios can sometimes assist you in finding your way, this is not always the case. Be sure to bring navigation supplies such as paper maps, compasses, and global positioning systems (with offline maps) on your remote exploration.
Medical Gear
Before risking your life by venturing into the wild, participate in a wilderness first aid training program to prepare you for the situations you may face. Pack medical and emergency supplies such as bandages, syringes, antibiotic ointment, alcohol, a pocketknife, rope, and a fire extinguisher.
Bug-Out Gear
A bug-out bag is a bag that contains every item you would need to survive for seventy-two hours. This could come in handy if you find yourself in a dangerous situation that you need to get out of quickly. But-out bags should contain some form of shelter, water, food, clothing, light, first aid, defense tools, navigation tools, and more.
Recovery Gear
The purpose of recovery gear is to help you escape a treacherous situation. Before going on an overland adventure, pack a shovel, an entrenching tool, a spade, and a self-recovery traction board. Make sure that you are trained in how to use these items in all kinds of dangerous situations.
Vehicle Gear
Vehicle gear that may come in handy includes tires, roller cams, quickie tie-downs, and bungee cords. These items can be used to repair and facilitate your vehicle if it is damaged or stuck.
Spare Gear
Before you journey into the wild, pack a few extra essentials such as a tire repair kit and compressor, spare vehicle fluids, water purifiers, hand and foot warmers, water bottles, and more.
