Rock climbing is an exhilarating and adventurous sport that requires mental control, endurance, and physical strength. Rock climbers need to have knowledge, skill, experience, and the proper tools to tackle the challenges of many of the world’s rock climbing courses. If you are just starting out, you will need to invest in a reliable rock climbing kit. Here are some components of rock-climbing kit that you should have:
Six Basic Components Of A Rock-Climbing Kit
Harnesses- harnesses can be partly or fully adjustable. Because harnesses are crucial for your safety, make sure that they are durable and have strong buckles. When choosing a harness, you need to wear it and make sure that you feel comfortable. It should be tight enough and your waistband should always be above the hips.
Belay- a belay device is needed to control the rope during belaying and it allows rock climbers to go up or down with relative ease. As a safety measure, the belay has a friction brake that’s triggered when the rope is slacking. This will bring the fall to a stop.
Helmet- a helmet protects your head when tripping over rocks or from falling rocks. It’s recommended to choose a helmet with a built-in head torch for better safety. The helmet should be certified to withstand intense impacts. When trying out a helmet, make sure that it won’t come off even with the chin strap undone. It should sit level on the head and fit to about one inch above eyebrows.
Boots- rock climbing boots should be snug and comfortable. For longer mountaineering trips, you should choose slightly loose boots and for bouldering, you should get tighter boots. Slightly loose boots are more comfortable, while tighter boots help you to climb faster and better.
Backpack- you need a backpack for a mountaineering trip for carrying spare climbing gears, water bottles, dry food, first-aid kit, compass, a small flashlight, bandages, communication devices, and spare clothing. When choosing a backpack, make sure that it’s compact and won’t obstruct your movement during climbing. Some rock-climbing backpacks have quick release buckles, which are crucial during emergency situations. Make sure that water bottles, compasses, flashlights, and other things you carry are shatter-proof.
